Hi everyone,
I am John Feeney from the Reno/Sparks Scheels in Nevada. I am lucky enough to be on a team with 3 other riders from the store and so far we have been taking advantage of the amazing benefits of this event. Our bike shop and crew is bar none one of the best in the Reno area, I am eternally grateful, in that, if it wasn't for Scheels and its employees, I would not be progressing into bikes as I used to be intimidated to go into local shops.
2009 Tour de Scheels.
Start - May 18th
End - July 13th
Requirements - Must always wear a helmet, ride between sunrise/sunset unless commuting to/from work, 75 miles per week and a century (100 mile ride) on the last day, final day ride must leave before 9:00 AM local time, more to add later in edit (if possible).
Each rider is using a Trek Madone 4.5 and the proper riding equipment (clothes, pedals/shoes, bottle/cages, pump, etc) in order to learn more about road bikes and given a goal to sell a specific number of road bikes $998 and above. Other employees are given the chance and encouraged to demo out the teams bikes in order to understand, and promote the sport; another event in parallel to the Tour de Scheels is a raffle to win a Fuji bicycle, in which, any employee totalling 100 miles or more per week is introduced into the raffle per 100 miles.
If I am missing anything else, please let me know.
I figure that this thread is a great way for everyone to log miles for the event. I also encourage any other users to log their miles and ride alongside us virtually (try to get your 75 miles per week). Also please leave an introduction about yourself, your bike, your background, and any other information you would like us to know.
Okay i'll give it a start.
I am John Feeney, currently 23 y/o, started with Scheels last summer (hire date 7/16/08 I think) with the opening of the Reno/Sparks Scheels in the legends outdoor mall, which is currently in progress and majority of the stores opening this summer. I am currently a student at the University of Nevada-Reno, major in Electrical Engineering, and have one more year left. Other things I enjoy besides cycling are, climbing, swimming, studying, paintball, games, my two dogs (Border Collie and German Shepherd), friends, family, and recently I love watching cycling; when I was younger I used to think it was pretty boring.
The team this year for R/S Scheels consists of: Chuck Matheson, Nick Ruana, Matt Saurbry, myself, and Landon Hefty as an alternate.
It is currently day 3 of the TDS we decided to start off day one with 50, 65 mile ride (50 for majority) and day two was Tuesday Scheels bike club in which many did 25 miles. My current total for the previous two days is 95 miles, and looking at another 50 today (early AM currently). Since I am part time, my goal is to ride between 150-200 miles per week and hopefully more. This opportunity to ride has been great. I have explored reno much more than I would in a car, and have been able to enjoy the great weather. The only downside is my amazing tan lines; besides the farmers tan, I currently have a sideburn/beard tan in conjunction with my raccoon eyes due to the sunglasses. This is a small price to pay in compare to the amazing experience so far.
I will try to keep this thread up to date as each week passes and approaches the final day of the TDS. Good luck and look forward to reading many other participants.
